A Satirical Look with Pen and Ink, Digital, Collage and More…

A class

Here are a couple of images from a figure drawing session a couple of weeks ago. The fellow we were drawing was really great. He was thin and sort of bony. I am not entirely sure what it is that appeals to me about this, but I much prefer this, over someone who has a perfectly toned and proportionate figure. I guess maybe, it is that I don’t ever really see things as perfect. And if they are close to perfect, I find it hard to attach myself to them in this way.

I  am profoundly drawn to what others may find unappealing.

It seems a little more realistic to me somehow.

Before you leave…

Here is the rest of what you might have already seen in my e-promo. As I said, I used only a small part of the illustration so that you could get a better idea as to the drawing quality of some of my work. This tends to get lost when I am limited to showing smaller pieces in the emails.

Also. Here is a bit of blurb from the story. This may have been the one thing that somehow inspired me to end up where I did with this drawing.

“But tomorrow, all eyes would be on Morgenstern and his success — or failure — at managing first impressions would set the stage for the rest of his time at Lurelco. There was nothing tangible Morgenstern could offer Lurelco’s staff. He had no authority to award retention bonuses. Yet, he had to find a way to convince them to stay and be helpful to their new colleagues.”

My place-the spot where I draw.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine came across this store that was selling off large pieces of an old bowling alley lane from Montreal. At the time I was looking for material to build my table out of. It all just seemed to fall into place.

A campaign for a Wine Boutique

Here is the latest of four illustrations I have developed over the last several years for a wine boutique in Calgary, AB, Canada. Bin 905 wanted to do something separated them from all of the other wine retailers in the city. The manager of the store like my work so he asked me to come up with something a little different. Below you will see what has transpired over the years.

Dripped

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try out an online source book for creative people. I wasn’t quite sure at first but after a little exploration, it looks like it will be a great resource. I hope anyway. And if not, the investment is not all that bad. Beats the, and I have tried them several times, very expensive printed books. Which I guess I did have a little success with. Next year maybe.

Here are another couple of images from a book I submitted to the sketchbook project. I haven’t yet uploaded these to their site but here is a link to see what it was all about. http://arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject

More graphite and digital

Here are a few images I did for Alberta Oil magazine which is part of Venture Publishing. Both were used as spots and the first one, was part of a feature. The larger image can be seen  in the gallery.

From a Sketchbook

In February 2011 I will be participating in a project that involves, I think, 28,000+ sketchbooks. Artists/people from all over will be submitting a small moleskin that will travel around and then it becomes part of the Brooklyn Art Library. Will send more details later but for now, here are a couple of the pages from my book. The theme I was working with was “Happy Thoughts”.

A friend of mine sent me a short story, from the text he sent (still need to read it yet) I wrote this to accompany this drawing.

This was a drawing that I took from another sketchbook. I think what I was thinking about here, one day, was the idea of  sitting in church. Just think. ; )

This is it for now, but I will add more here in the next few days.

From a far off land…

Back in May/June of this Year I worked on a project with the Creative Director at Saatchi Design London, UK. The project hasn’t really gone as far as they had initially planned, but I am told it still may. I guess we’ll see what happens, but go here to see how they have used the drawings in the flash intro on their site. Still not sure how I feel about the juxtaposition of the graphite drawings I produced with the ink text that I rendered.

Here are a couple samples of the drawings.
